When the world shut down in 2020, we had no idea when we would be able to get together again. Finally, after nearly three years, WordCamp US is back in person and better than ever. On September 9-11, WordPressers from all over the world will arrive in San Diego to learn, network, and connect in person.

If you’ve never attended a WordCamp in person, it can be a little intimidating, but we are Torque are seasoned pros and have some tips and tricks to make sure you have the best experience possible.

General WordCamp Advice

First, let’s dive into some general advice that applies to any event.

  • Bring a water bottle: You will be walking a lot and might not be able to get to a drinking fountain.
  • Bring chargers: Even if you intend to spend your time mostly networking, you will be on your phone or computer constantly. Make sure you bring your computer and phone charger to the venue so you don’t have to waste time running back to your room.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: There is a lot of standing and walking, so wearing comfortable shoes will make all the difference.
  • Introduce yourself to everyone: A huge part of any event is getting to know the people around you. Sit next to someone you don’t know and introduce yourself. You might meet your new best friend or even a business partner.
  • Don’t forget about the hallway sessions: Though the main reason to go to a WordCamp is to learn from sessions, make sure to connect with the people around you. A lot of valuable networking can be done in the hallways and at lunch.
  • Bring business cards: I know, I know, we are in the year 2022 and business cards sound outdated. However, you will be meeting a lot of people and handing someone a card is faster and easier than watching someone input a contact.

Conference Specific Advice

Each WordCamp is different. Although the basics remain the same, every experience is different. That’s why we’ve compiled some tips that are specific to WCUS.

  • Don’t miss the State of the Word. Matt Mullenweg’s annual update on the platform is a great overview of the current state of WordPress and where it’s heading. Catch it at 4:45 on Saturday.
  • Make sure you go to as many talks as possible. There are some really great speakers this year and it would be a shame to miss out on anything.
  • Don’t miss out on the livestream. Tickets sold out incredibly fast this year but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on all the great content. Every talk will be livestreamed, so you can participate anywhere in the world.
  • Participate in Contributor Day. On Sunday you can get together with old and new friends and just work. Find a team you want to contribute to and get working.
  • Attend the official WordCamp after party. You worked hard and now it’s time to celebrate WordPress. The official after party this year is outside in Riverfront Park at Town and Country Resort

What do to in San Diego

San Diego has surf, sand, and palm trees. It is a city with a lot to do but if you have time, there are a few we think are must-dos.

  • Meet some cool animals: It is no secret that the San Diego Zoo is one of the best in the country. If you have never seen a giant panda, it is worth the wait. What some don’t know is that the organization also owns a Safari Park, which houses the only platypus outside of Australia.
  • Eat delicious local food: Because it is so close to Mexico, San Diego has delicious and fresh Mexican food including fish tacos. If Italian is more your thing, San Diego has a thriving Little Italy with tons of restaurants and cafes. Once you’re full, head over to one of San Diego’s many breweries.
  • Soak up the sun: San Diego is known for beautiful, sunny beaches. Whether you like swimming, reading on the beach, or playing volleyball, there is a gorgeous beach for you.
